Toastmasters Pathways & the Road to DTM

Pathways is Toastmasters' education program. You pick a learning path on Base Camp (the online learning platform), then climb five levels of speech and leadership projects at your own pace. Each level earns an award; finishing a path earns a "Proficient" designation; and two completed paths anchor the journey to DTM — the highest recognition Toastmasters bestows.

Choose your path

Six specialized paths are open for enrollment (US$35 each). Every path starts with the same Level 1 fundamentals — you can't pick wrong, only different. Expand a path to see what makes it unique from Level 2 up.

Every path climbs the same five levels

Levels are completed in order; projects within a level can be done in any order. Whatever path you pick, the arithmetic is the same: 15 projects (11 required + 4 electives) and a minimum of roughly 15–17 prepared speeches.

Mastering Fundamentals Identical in every path — 4 projects, 5 speeches: Ice Breaker (4–6 min) · Writing a Speech with Purpose · Introduction to Vocal Variety and Body Language · Evaluation and Feedback (2 speeches + serving as an evaluator).
Learning Your Style 3 projects: two style projects that vary by path (see the path cards above) + Introduction to Toastmasters Mentoring.
Increasing Knowledge 1 path-specific required project + 2 electives · 1 Successful Club Series presentation.
Building Skills 1 path-specific required project + 1 elective · 2 Education Series presentations (Successful Club Series + Better Speaker Series).

Since October 22, 2025, each level also opens with a set of required club meeting roles — 3 at Level 1 (including Table Topics Speaker before your Ice Breaker), 4 at Level 2, and escalating roles after that (General Evaluator debuts at Level 4). Roles must be completed while working in that level. The five Education Series presentations at Levels 3–5 (10–15 min each) were added at the same time.

How electives work

You choose 4 electives per path — 2 at Level 3, 1 at Level 4, 1 at Level 5 — from a shared catalog, so a project required in one path shows up as an elective in others.

Level 3 (~13–15 options): Active Listening, Connect with Storytelling, Connect with Your Audience, Creating Effective Visual Aids, Deliver Social Speeches, Effective Body Language, Focus on the Positive, Inspire Your Audience, Know Your Sense of Humor, Make Connections Through Networking, Prepare for an Interview, Understanding Vocal Variety, Using Descriptive Language, Using Presentation Software, Researching and Presenting.
Level 4 (~8–11 options): Create a Podcast, Manage Online Meetings, Building a Social Media Presence, Question-and-Answer Session, Public Relations Strategies, Write a Compelling Blog, Manage Projects Successfully, Managing a Difficult Audience.
Level 5 (~5–6 options): Ethical Leadership, High Performance Leadership, Leading in Your Volunteer Organization, Lessons Learned, Moderate a Panel Discussion, Prepare to Speak Professionally.

Beyond the six paths

Two other product types sit alongside the standard paths — different rules, different flavor.

Basic Training for Toastmasters Vintage · BT

Founder Ralph C. Smedley's original 1943 Basic Training manual, revived as a five-level path: 12 formal speech projects plus meeting roles and self-evaluations. Completing it earns the BT credential.

The Communication Series Vintage · CES

The classic pre-2018 manuals — Competent Communication (Levels 1–3), The Entertaining Speaker, and Storytelling — as one five-level path: 20 projects, each with a speech. Completing it earns the CES credential.

Explorations Coming soon

Short, focused learnings of three projects on one topic. The first, Online Meeting Mastery (Attending, Delivering, and Leading online meetings), earns credit equivalent to a Level 2 completion.

Vintage paths cost US$60, have no electives, require completing Level 1 of any standard path first, and — like every path — count toward DTM.

The road to DTM

Distinguished Toastmaster

Distinguished Toastmaster is the highest recognition Toastmasters bestows. Six requirements, in three lanes you can work in parallel:

Education

Complete two learning paths. Any two different paths count — standard, legacy, or vintage.
Complete the DTM project. A self-designed capstone: create and implement a project of your own design. Unlocks on Base Camp once you've finished one path plus Levels 1–3 of your second.

Club leadership

Serve as a club officer — two 6-month terms or one annual term (President, VP Education, VP Membership, VP Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer, or Sergeant at Arms) — plus help prepare a Club Success Plan and attend Club Officer Training.
Serve as a club mentor or club coach. Mentor a newly chartered club, or be appointed coach to rebuild a struggling club to Distinguished.

District & beyond

Serve a full one-year term as a District leader (July 1 – June 30): District Director, Program Quality Director, Club Growth Director, PR Manager, Administration Manager, Finance Manager, Division Director, or Area Director.
Serve as a club sponsor, or conduct a Speechcraft or Youth Leadership program. Sponsor = help charter a brand-new club.

A realistic timeline

There's no official minimum, but the officer terms set a floor of about two years; most members take 3–5 years. A common shape:

Year 1 — first path + a club officer year.
Year 2 — second path + a year as Area Director.
Year 3 — club coach or sponsor role, Speechcraft, and the DTM project.

Enrolled before October 2024? The five legacy paths

Five paths retired when the new Base Camp launched on October 23, 2024: Effective Coaching, Innovative Planning, Leadership Development, Strategic Relationships, and Team Collaboration. If you purchased one before the cutover:

You can still finish it on Base Camp, with full credit — there is no deadline.
A completed legacy path counts toward the DTM two-path requirement.
Legacy paths are frozen: the October 2025 meeting-role and Education Series additions don't apply to them.

The fine print

Pricing: standard paths US$35 (since July 1, 2026 — the first increase in Pathways history), vintage paths US$60. Prices set by Toastmasters International.
Awards & credit: level and path completions submit to Club Central automatically and earn Distinguished Club Program credit for your club.
